History of Athmar Park

Athmar Park is an area full of history, great stories, and people. The neighborhood is going through a renaissance due to significant improvements along the South Platte River which has been helped along by very active community involvement. Houses are being remodeled and people are moving to the neighborhood at a substantial rate. According to urban legend, the name “Athmar” originated from the combination of the names of the developers’ two wives—Athea and Mary. Originally developed in the 1930s, this land on the banks of the South Platte River where there were once celery farms and brick country homes.

Recreation and Culture

Athmar Park neighborhood has access to the South Platte Bike trail and four amazing parks including Huston Lake Park, Aspgren Park, Vanderbilt Lake Park, and the Johnson Habitat Park. The Athmar Park community hosts annual picnics, a movie in the park, progressive dinners, volleyball games, and bicycle tours.

With close proximity to the Little Saigon Business District and Federal Boulevard, there is no shortage of amazing, authentic restaurant fare. You can get some of the best food in town including dim sum, Vietnamese and traditional Mexican.

Athmar Park Commuter Accessibility

Located in southwest Denver, Athmar Park enjoys exceptional access to downtown via I-25 or the RTD light rail along Santa Fe. It’s location also makes for an easy drive north to get onto 6th Avenue when it’s time to escape the city.
