Whittier

Noteworthy Mention of Whittier Neighborhood

Denver’s Whittier neighborhood is named after a school that was named in honor of John Whittier (1807-1892), an 1800’s American abolitionist poet. This area of Denver is witnessing a major change in its demographics as more professionals move to Denver’s inner-city neighborhoods. Whittier enjoys a tremendous location close to City Park, RiNo and provides an easy commute to downtown. The RTD L line light rail station is on the east side of the enclave.

Architecture and Homes in Whittier

The neighborhood is mostly residential, featuring many homes that are over a century old. Most of the houses were built prior to the 1940s and some predate 1900. The Craftsman architecture is easily recognizable as you wander the quiet residential streets of the Whittier neighborhood. In addition to the Craftsman houses, you’ll find lovely Victorian homes, brick bungalows and Denver Square home styles.

In addition to its coveted location, Whittier has some great public resources for its residents. The off-leash dog park at Fuller Park is a great place to take Fido and meet other dog lovers. Head over to George Morrison Sr. Park for a jog or pack a picnic. This lovely strip of green belt parallels Martin Luther King Blvd. for five blocks and provides a wonderful backdrop to enjoy some of Denver’s 300 days of sunshine.

The Whittier Neighborhood continues to be one of Denver’s most ethnically diverse areas. The influx of youthful energy and visionary capital of the Whittier Neighborhood Association will ensure that Whittier will remain a viable place to live and raise a family.

Highlights Include:

  • Whittier Cafe | “This eclectic, inviting community gathering place serves up authentic African coffee and espresso drinks as well as African beer and wine. Everyone has “a place at the table” at this welcoming cafe.”
  • Genna Rae Wings and More | “Can you spell mouth-watering wings? They are exceptional and no doubt you’ll return for more. There are only a few chairs along the wall so don’t plan to eat on the premises. And, it’s best to order online to avoid a wait.”
