Cheeseman Park

Noteworthy Mention of Cheeseman Park Neighborhood

Denver’s Cheesman Park neighborhood is centrally located and has one of the most beautiful parks in all of Denver.

History of Cheeseman Park

Named after Walter Cheesman, an early Denver pioneer, this 80-acre park was originally home to Prospect Hill Cemetery. From 1858 until 1890, people of varying religions, ethnicity, and fraternal organizations were buried here until the upkeep of the cemetery began to decline and few people elected to bury their loved ones on the site. The city decided to change the designation of the property from a cemetery to a park in 1890 and, as a result, hundreds of graves had to be exhumed and transferred to other cemeteries. Some of the bodies were never moved and remain buried underneath the park. In 2008 when the adjacent Denver Botanic Gardens began construction on a new parking structure, human bones and parts of coffins were discovered during the excavation. The remains were ultimately removed and buried in other local cemeteries.

Cheesman Park is now home to over 1,800 trees and is welcome open space for urban dwellers. It hosts many special events and functions, and the Memorial/Pavilion and fountain serve as a focal point of the area. People enjoy running along the dirt paths that encircles the park and families love the picnic areas and playground.
